As you know, it didn't work but it was worth a try.  Tonight I'll try a few more things.  First off, I'll try putting these folders right on the C: drive instead of on the desktop.  Then I'll try disabling UAC (which I think I tried already and didn't work).  And then I'll look into the "Off-line file sync" Windows feature that is apparently turned on by default...

Fingers are crossed that it'll just work if I move them off the desktop...

Moving the files to directories directly under the C: drive didn't work.  A little more investigating and yes, this is a common problem with Vista and people have named it "Vista's Long Goodbye" (although for me it's permanent until reboot).  So Microsoft acknowledges the issue but will give no explanation.  While I'm waiting for my fix ... here are two reliable links...

Couple things that I was thinking about with this (not that either will provide a fix) had to do with the difference between your situation and Mine.  The first thing that came to mind is the fact that you are on a domain.  I wonder if there is any sort of caching going on that would be affecting this?

The other thing I was thinking about that your problem is only with these specific folders, and the problem follows the folders.  The problem is only there after you create a new set of files, and goes away after a reboot until you create new files.  This leads me to believe that there is a helper DLL of some sort for one of your programs accessing this folder that is not being properly disposed when the program is closed.  Have you tried checking that with each of these programs your memory and number of running processes goes back to what it was before use upon close?  I imagine you will see a slight increase in memory useage and/or an additional process (that may have an obscure name).  You might also find an unlocker program that lists out what programs/dlls are using the locked files to help track something like this down.

Just my 2¢

I always just type in "gmail.com" to my browser, but you can use the full http://www.gmail.com or http://mail.google.com.  Although this isn't the secure version of gmail, I have never had an issue with an error while loading.  I tested doing https://www.gmail.com and although it works, firefox tells you that the certificate being used is not registered to gmail, but rather mail.google.

After your suggestion, I looked into this.  I already had it in my menu, and I agree it is quite interesting to play with.  I especially liked how you can set up your fantasy team and it will track all of your players for you.

I like the Scoreboard feature the best.  I like how you can drill down into each game for detailed stats.  I only wish you could get some high-def resolution through it, then I would scrap my cable box altogether.

I had no idea you can track a fantasy team.  That's the only good reason I have to actually try fantasy football, so maybe next season I'll give it a shot.

So tonight I replaced with power-supply with a new Antec NeoPower 500W Modular PSU.  Only $60 at Fry's.  I also replaced the Pentium D 935 3.2ghz CPU with a Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2ghz.  It's a slower speed but according to the hardware charts it's faster, cooler and gives all-around better performance.  And it bumped up my CPU rating in Vista from 4.8 to 5.0.  So ........ if this doesn't stop it from re-booting then it's the memory or the power coming from the wall.  Fingers crossed.

Hi,

There is a video which demonstrates step-by-step the request and installation of GoDaddy SSL certificate:

www.netometer.com/.../iis7-godaddy-ssl-certificate

It is important to install first the Intermediate Certificates. In case you have installed first your certificate you have to follow the troubleshooting outlined in:

www.netometer.com/.../index.php

The troubleshooting steps for IIS6 and IIS7 are the same.

Generally GoDaddy allows you to Re-key your certificate up to 3 times, in a 30 days period after you’ve purchased the certificate.

It is a good practice to export your new certificate and keep it in a safe place (together with the Intermediate Certificates) for backup and recovery purposes. Of course, you can download the intermediate certificates anytime but it is easier to have then handy instead of looking for them online and downloading them.

If the server dies and you have to re-install it or you are moving the websites to a new server you can simply import (first the Intermediate certificates) your certificate in the new server. That’s easier, and besides that the right approach to do it.

I will be posting a separate video about this as it seems a lot of people are migrating/upgrading to IIS7 and face the problem with exporting/importing their public certificate(s).

Some people are posting the question – can I run a web server farm (using load balancing for example) and install the same certificate on all the servers. You can physically do this but that’s illegal. You can not use simultaneously the Turbo SSL certificate on more then one servers.

The process of importing/exporting SSL certificate described above assumes that you will stop using it on the old server.

Regards,

Dean

I tried a similar installation procedure and got an error when trying to import the .crt file from GoDaddy.

CertEnroll::CX509Enrollment:_InstallResponse ASN1 bad tag value met 0x8009319b (ASN.267)

this occurred when I clicked OK in the Specify Certificate Authority Response dialog.

any ideas what could be causing this?

June 11, 2008 5:49 PM

Matt Williamson said:

Jim - I would try re-keying your certificate again.  If you've got a regular GoDaddy SLL certificate and you're running Server 2008, then the instructions above should work.  Maybe your CSR wasn't pasted properly?  I just select all of the text, including the comments, and it works.  Make sure you choose IIS in GoDadddy?  The default is Apache.  And make sure you install the Intermediate certificate before importing your certificate.

Dean - Interesting that you can't apply the same certificate to servers in a web farm... I didn't know that.  I would guess that companies buy a wildcard SSL certificate (*.domain.com) to take care of that issue.  Then I imagine they'd be allowed to install that certificate on as many machines as they'd like.

There are quite a few things that could be causing the problem (firewall, pbx, ip phones, router, the settings teliax tells you to use, etc).

The best thing to do to start diagnosing your problem is to download and install the free version of the X-Lite softphone from CounterPath.  Using a microphone, speakers, and your Teliax account information you should be able to easily send and receive calls.  Enter your Teliax info like this:

Add new SIP Account.

Display Name = Teliax Username

User Name = Teliax Username

Password = Teliax Device Password

Authorization Username = Teliax Username

Domain = xxx.teliax.net

Check "Register with domain and receive incoming calls"

Select "Send outbound via... Domain"

If you can send and receive calls, you know the problem lies within your firewall/pbx/phone configuration.  If not, the problem is on Teliax's end.

WOW! This is the first negative mention I have seen about FreeNAS, which is good.  It is always good to hear people's troubles with a system.

I had little to no trouble setting up FreeNAS this weekend.  I used an older computer I had laying around.  And also, I have not tried setting up a RAID yet (I thought I would get up and running first then break it incrementally ;-)), but from what I have read it seems pretty easy.  It sounds like two things may be at play to cause the two people above so much trouble; hardware that wasn't compatible, and/or lack of research (RTFM ;-)).

Cheers!

One with software PATA RAID 0 (yes, call me a mad man). The other on a box w/ integrated SATA RAID 1.

Both work fine. I had a tough time getting boot from USB key. Was able to write img to USB key as in instructions, but it would not boot on home machine (SiS chipset) no matter what I tried. Took to office, put in machine w/ Intel chipset, booted up. Installing on USB does make for a  VERY SLOW bootup. I ended up using a spare hdd for boot.

I wish you had given it more of a chance, it really is great stuff.

That 4 TB NAS would've SMOKED.

While FreeNAS does have a bit of a learning curve to initially set up, once you play with it a bit it is very powerful.  I have a machine running with (6) 500GB SATA drives in a RAID5 array, and I love it!  Of course, there are certain quirks that I have encountered, but that is to be expected with any beta software.

Has anyone had experience with FreeNAS using Active Directory? I have successfully got it up and running, however it seems I am doing something wrong with permissions management.

Hi,

A much better way of performing (online) backups of VM's, which will also include snapshots is to use the Server 2008 command DISKSHADOW.

DISKSHADOW will allow you to take a snapshot of the volume holding the VM's, which you can then mount as a drive letter and copy of the contents.
